It was rumored on the Internet yesterday that Mo Yan, the Nobel literature laureate of 2012, acts as advertising spokesperson for a deluxe cigarette brand of his hometown Shandong, E China.

The brand "Taishan Foguang", literally meaning "Buddha's light over Mount Taishan", was poised to bring out a limited edition cigarette package featuring ten novels by Mo Yan, including the well-known "Red Sorghum"and"Sandalwood Death".

It was alleged that only 100 cartons of the deluxe brand would go into market, each costing up to 20,120 yuan.

Details of the package were revealed by four ad images circulating on the Internet. Mo Yan's portrait was inscribed on the pack made of padauk, a kind of precious wood that accounted for its sky-high price, according to SINA English.

More eye-catching might be a poster which showed the silhouette of Mo Yan with a burning cigarette between his lips, whispering words of wisdom: " In fact I only have three cigarettes. One is in Sweden, the land of my glory; one is in Gaomi, the place of my origin. And the third one——I keep it to ignite the Buddha's light of inspiration."

Taishan Foguang is a top cigarette brand in Shandong, which cannot be easily purchased for its low production. The truth of Mo Yan's involvement in the hype has not been verified by any party.
